I run a career ad time management coaching business. I help people of middle management level and above with career change and development and SME owners with their time management. recently I have been working with someone who has made a very skillful sideways career move within the same organisation work to his advantage and I have helped an SME owner to refine her time management so that she gets more done in less time.

The coaching I provide is different in that I help clients improve their quality of life dramatically. .

What flexibility does being an independent business give you over a national chain / business?
The flexibility that I enjoy is that I can implement a new or different idea whenever I want to. If I want to change my way of working I don’t have to ask permission from anyone, I just do it. In the same way, if I find that a certain work practice is no longer effective, then I will stop doing it and replace it with another.

What do you feel is the biggest challenge for small businesses at the moment?
To find enough business to make a living and enjoy a balanced life, it is better to have a business in which you can work a certain number of hours, take adequate time off, have a holiday and have a balanced and enjoyable life.

Looking back, which piece of advice would you give to somebody setting up their own business today?
Ensure that you market yourself in the most effective way possible. make it your business to see how Social Media can work to your advantage and study your competitors activities, so that you can describe your business in a way that appears different to theirs, which in turn make your business stand out.

What part does Social Media play in your business?
Social Media is my way of introducing myself to prospective clients by posting regular messages and useful tips. I use Twitter 6 times aa day and Facebook once a day, as well as participating in LinkedIn discussion and posting blogs on LinkedIn. It is an effective way of marketing my business.
